Our GOAL: Provide student athletes relationships and experiences that contribute to the development of skills through a fun and positive learning environment while enjoying the sport of lacrosse.
The Marshall County Yellow Jackets will be entering their inaugural season in the Spring of 2025. The team is open for all students in grades 6-8 attending Marshall County Schools to join. The Yellow Jackets will be a feeder program going into John Marshall High School.
The team is open to both boys and girls attending Moundsville and Sherrard Middle Schools. Although it will be the boys version of the sport that will be played, girls interested in playing high school lacrosse are still very much encouraged to participate.

MEET THE COACH
Hello! My name is Gregory Shutler. I am a former student of Marshall County Schools, graduating from John Marshall in 2016. I was a part of the original group of guys that started the lacrosse program at John Marshall in 2014. I played all 3 years as an attackman/midfielder until I graduated in 2016. After graduating high school, I attended West Virginia University where I graduated with a Master’s and Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education Teacher Education and a Minor in Scholastic Coaching, finishing school in the Summer of 2021.
While at WVU, I discovered my true passion for coaching. I started my coaching career in 2019 where I was a volunteer assistant coach for Morgantown High School’s Boys Lacrosse team from 2019-2021. I became the JV Head Coach for the 2021 season and was the Varsity game day box coach. After the 2021 season, my wife, Natalie, and I moved to a suburb outside of Philadelphia. I continued coaching and teaching in the greater Philadelphia area at Conestoga High School for 2 seasons, primarily working with their JV teams. I also coached for NXT Lacrosse Club, working with their 2028’s graduating class in both field and box lacrosse. I also have 3 seasons of experience coaching high school girls’ soccer, 2 seasons of middle school basketball, and other various camps.
Since moving back to WV in the Winter of 2023/24, I am a substitute teacher in the Marshall County School District and have returned to the John Marshall Boys Lacrosse program last season as the assistant coach. Last season we finished with a 1-10 overall record, with our 1 win coming in the final game of the season against Capital High School. That win did send us to the Division 2 State Playoffs where we fell to a very strong St. Albans team. Upon the completion of the 2024 season, I was awarded the WVSLA Division 2 Assistant Coach of the Year as voted by other coaches across the state.
It was always the goal to return to where it all began for me and help lead a John Marshall team to become one of the best lacrosse programs in the state. Bringing back a middle school program is vital for the success and growth of not only John Marshall’s program, but also the growth of the sport that I love in the Ohio Valley and the entire state.
This coming season will mark my 7th year of coaching and I am ready to embark on the next big chapter in it with the start of the Yellow Jacket program. Lacrosse has brought so much enjoyment into my life and I am ready to tackle the challenge of starting a brand-new program. Through much time and effort, I hope I can pass my knowledge and love of the game onto the next generation of student athlete lacrosse players.

History of Marshall County Youth Lacrosse
The Marshall County Spiders was a middle school youth lacrosse club that operated from 2015 - 2019. Many aspects of how the team was ran will be implemented into the Yellow Jacket program.
Similarly, this team was a feeder program for John Marshall. John Marshall’s most successful seasons came when they had athletes who formerly played middle school lacrosse. Having made the WVSLA Division 2 State Championship game in 2018 and 2023, being led by former Marshall County Spiders. John Marshall Lacrosse is still working towards winning their first State Title.
